Bidding on the rubbish collection contracts in the Kingdom’s capital have now closed, after applications first opened on Feb 25 this year, according to a Phnom Penh Municipal spokesperson yesterday.

Met Measpheakdey, a city hall spokesperson,  that the deadline for all applications has now concluded with 10 companies selected for shortlisting. He added that the committee is now reviewing all the shortlisted applicants’ backgrounds and qualifications for final selection. “The committee is now reviewing and doing a careful evaluation for each shortlisted applicant to determine who will meet the required level of criteria,” he said.

However, he could not provide a specific timeframe for when the winner of the contracts will be announced. “The process may take some time because once the review of each applicant is finished, there will be another committee to make the final decision,” he added.

The tender to contract was announced last year by the local government after Cintri, the company that previously held the rubbish collection monopoly in the capital for roughly two decades, had its contract revoked.

Because of the company’s failings to meet its contractual obligations, the government said it needed at least three to four companies to handle the service to create competition in the market.

The city has been divided into three zones with separate tenders and companies sought for each.

Currently, the Phnom Penh Municipality is managing all rubbish collection in the capital until the contractors can take over the responsibility, deploying 40 vehicles to six districts in the city each day.

Cambodia produces roughly 10,000 tonnes of rubbish daily, of which 65 percent is organic waste, 20 percent is plastic and the rest is solid garbage, according to a recent report from the Environment Ministry.

The report said that Phnom Penh alone produces about 3,000 tonnes of rubbish daily.
