Cambodia Travel-Explore Cambodia: The Ultimate Cambodia Travel Guide

Cambodia Travel The Kingdom of Wonder

Oh Cambodia. My love affair with this little country started on my first backpacking trip around Southeast Asia in 2012. A few years later, I moved to Phnom Penh and worked with a local NGO for a year. It was a life-changing experience. As much as I try to resist her charms, I always find myself being drawn back into this complicated, devastatingly beautiful place.

Unlike most travellers, I’ve peeked behind the curtain. For me, Cambodia’s flaws only serve to sharpen the edges of its subtle beauty and the grace of its people. The nation’s recent history is something every traveller should take the time to learn about.

From the bright lights of Phnom Penh, a perpetual construction site, to the silent rice paddies of the middle country; from the charming back roads of smaller cities like Kampong Cham, Kampot and Battambang all the way to Siem Reap’s roaring Pub Street. I’ll take it all.

Sunrise at Angkor Wat, dusk on the Northern Mekong (home to the most majestic light shows in the world, by the way), and hours upon hours of soul-affirming, heart-string-tugging, eye-opening experiences in between. If you give Cambodia just a little bit of your time, she’ll reward you with a lifetime’s worth of knowledge and perspective. Trust me, you’ll be back for more.

Cheap & free things to do in Phnom Penh Cambodia

See the monks in the morning. Saffron robes and bare feet are a common sight in Phnom Penh. Starting at around 6am each morning, the city’s monks begin to emerge from their wats to collect morning alms and food offerings, stopping at shop doorways to chant blessings as they make their daily procession through the streets.

The best Phnom Penh cafe

to track down the best coffee in Phnom Penh. Includes French and European style cafes, artisanal coffee roasters, and cafes with WIFI.

When I was living and working in Cambodia, I was constantly on a mission to find the best coffee in Phnom Penh. I think I sampled just about every coffee shop in the capital at least once or twice before settling on a few favourite go-tos.

Every time I go back to visit, I’m surprised to see how many new Phnom Penh cafes have opened up. You might not notice it at first, but Cambodia’s capital city has an amazing coffee scene that’s only getting better with each passing year. cafes that specialise in European style coffee and coffee roasters are becoming more popular. So are trendy ‘Instagrammable’ and health food cafes that serve single origin coffee plus caffeine-free alternatives (yes, the turmeric latte has arrived in the Kingdom.

Building on the success of its Independence Monument and Toul Kork cafes, which double up as creative spaces for young Cambodian artists, Java recently opened Java Creative Cafe in Toul Tom Poung. In keeping with its philosophy of pushing the arts, the spacious two-storey cafe is both an art gallery and features a 54-seat black box theatre, with performances held by resident dance company, Prumsodun Ok and Natyarasa.

Daughters of Cambodia helps to empower those trapped in the sex industry in Cambodia, by providing training and resources. Their onsite visitor centre includes a lovely cafe, where people train as baristas and chefs. The coffee tastes just as good as it feels and the gooey chocolate brownie is famous for a reason.

The ingredients are so fresh and are placed in a great combo of flavours. The price is perfectly reasonable for the quality of the food. Totally recommend it!

The breakfast restaurants and cafes on this list are mostly (but not exclusively) geared towards expats and tourists. So I wanted to kick things off with a couple of local options.

There are a few typical Cambodian breakfast dishes you’ll see being served up at street stalls all over Phnom Penh:

  • Kuy teav – vermicelli noodle soup
  • Bobor – rice porridge (similar to congee)
  • Nom banh chok – rice noodles served with an aromatic fish gravy
  • Bai sach chrouk – pork and rice
  • Lok lak – marinated beef served with white rice and a fried egg (my favourite!)
  • Café toek doh koh toek gok – strong coffee served over ice with lots of sweet milk
Breakfast at Phnom Penh’s Russian Market, Psar Tuol Tompoung.

You can find street sellers and small restaurants cooking up breakfast on every street corner in Phnom Penh – literally. Most are open by 5am and serve breakfast until about 8 or 9, when they might close or change their menu to lunch fare.

Eating breakfast on the street is incredibly affordable, with most dishes costing the equivalent of 75 cents.

If you want to try a street food breakfast but you’re unsure where to go, my best tip is to ask a local. Ask your tuk tuk driver or hotel receptionist where they like to eat. Chances are, they’ll know the very best places nearby your accommodation.

It’s always a safe bet to head for the nearest green market. The Russian Market and Olympic Market in particular have a huge array of fresh food stalls cooking up Khmer breakfast dishes. If you want a truly local breakfast experience, this is it!

Where to Eat Breakfast in Phnom Penh

The very best cafes and restaurants for breakfast in Phnom Penh – from English fry ups to French bakeries and traditional Cambodian fare.

No matter how you like to start your day, Phnom Penh has a breakfast option for everyone. From typical Cambodian fare to English fry ups, French pastries to smoothie bowls, here are the very best cafes and restaurants for breakfast in Phnom Penh.

Phnom Penh is a city that wakes up early. Breakfast is part of the daily routine for most locals, a good many of whom eat at markets, street food stalls and small restaurants on their way to work or school.

If you’re a tourist visiting Phnom Penh, I encourage you to get out of bed and explore the city in the early hours. It’s the most magical time of day.

If your hotel doesn’t provide breakfast or you’re staying in an Airbnb, you’ll find lots of places open early where you can start your day with either a hearty meal or a light snack.

Unusual Khmer food to eat in Phnom Penh

Feeling adventurous? These ‘unconventional’ Khmer delicacies taste much better than they sound!

  • Prahok. Fermented fish paste and a Khmer food staple. Can be eaten as a main meal with minced pork and eggplant (prahok ktis) or served as an accompaniment.
  • Pong tia koun. Fertilised duck eggs steamed and eaten from the shell. Some restaurants do a contemporary, slightly more palatable battered rendition—sort of like a Cambodian Scotch egg.
  • Snails. Fried, steamed, grilled or boiled—Cambodians love them. Extract them from their shells using a toothpick and dunk them in salt mix or dipping sauce before eating.

Classic Khmer food to eat in Phnom Penh

If you want a taste of Cambodia’s culinary heritage, look out for these classic dishes. Most feature on all good cafe and restaurant menus, as well as being available at markets and street food stalls.

  • Amok. A creamy coconut milk curry traditionally prepared with freshwater fish. Steamed and served in delightful little banana-leaf boats.
  • Lok lak. Cubes or slices of beef marinated in paprika, Kampot pepper, tomato, fish sauce, and other flavours. Served with rice or french fries, and a soft fried egg on top.
  • Kuy teav. Classic Cambodian noodle soup featuring a complex beef or chicken bone broth, vermicelli noodles, and slices of meat and/or meat balls. If your hotel doesn’t provide breakfast (or even if it does), this makes for a perfect traditional Khmer breakfast at one of the city’s markets.

The best apartment building Service One  Khmer Food in Phnom Penh: 9 Fantastic Cambodian Restaurants

When I moved to Phnom Penh in 2016, it took me quite a while to warm to Cambodian food. I think many people visiting the country for the first time have a similar experience—maybe because Khmer food isn’t as well known outside the region as Vietnamese or Thai.

Phnom Penh doesn’t have the same vibrant street food scene as Hanoi or the night market culture of Bangkok, which does make it a bit trickier to try authentic Khmer food in Phnom Penh.

But it is out there—provided you know where to look. After much research and trial and error, I came up with this list of 9 excellent restaurants where you can sample traditional and contemporary Khmer food in Cambodia.

All listings are reputable and affordable (they are my personal recommendations, after all!), and observe good food hygiene standards.
